It’s day 20 and we’re officially two thirds of the way through sort save splurge. Today we’re talking about book organization. Textbooks, cookbooks, kids books, leisure reading material, magazines, etc. You have them, go grab ’em. Getting rid of books can be extremely difficult, but be completely honest with yourself when you start downsizing. Will you ever read it or use it as reference again? Be honest, be objective.
Call your local library and see if they’ll take a donation of gently used books. If you have kid books and the library won’t take them, call a school or daycare and see if they’ll take them. There is always Goodwill and similar stores that will take your books as well.
Have you considered going green and getting your magazines and other reading material digitally? My husband and I switched to using our Kindles for reading, but we’ll occasionally indulge is good old fashioned printed paper. I love photography books and like to feel the paper between my fingers and flip pages. I’m the same way when it comes to cookbooks, although my husband is convinced the Kindle versions are better. I’m not sold on that yet.
I envy folks with beautiful bookcases filled to the brim with books, but it just doesn’t fit my lifestyle. Maybe it fits yours? We move so often that books can go YEARS without being touched. Some don’t even get unpacked. What’s the point of having an enormous collection that never gets used? If you have the space and keep your books organized, more power to you. For those of you drowning in clutter, consider making some room by letting go of the books you no longer need.
