Happy New Year!!! Hope you’re not hurting too badly from last night’s festivities. I partied hard and by that, I mean I drank hot cocoa by the fire with my oldest and passed out shortly after. My how times have changed.
It’s day one of sort. save. splurge. and we’re tackling the pantry and refrigerator today. Like I promised, we’re starting with the simple, straight forward stuff. Pantry first. Pull everything out and give the shelves a good wipe down. Toss everything that’s expired and start putting everything back. My method is to have cereals and other dry snack items on the top shelf. The second shelf is for pastas, couscous, and any boxed meals. The third shelf is for all my baking ingredients and flours (I have a bunch of different kinds). The fourth shelf is for potatoes, onions, and garlic and the bottom shelf is for three 5 gallon jars filled with rice. I keep all my canned and jar items on a wire shelf that hangs of the backside of the pantry door. Do whatever makes the most sense and prevents items getting lost in the back.
The fridge is going to go the same way, but you’ll want to work quickly for obvious food safety issues. Pull everything out of the fridge first, wipe down and put highly perishable items back first. Check expiration dates, toss the icky stuff and put the rest back neatly. You’ll want to do the same for the freezer, but also check for visible freezer burn. If your fridge has a water dispensing system, you may want to replace your filter if it’s been awhile. (If you have to buy a filter, consider that a necessary expense. Clean drinking water is a must.) I hear that every six months is the average, but double check your owner’s manual if you have one.
Not too bad, right? Use the hashtag on social media outlets and let’s keep each other motivated!
