Thrift Store Ottoman Overhaul

In my effort to de-clutterify my life, knocking off projects just sitting in the garage waiting for a makeover was a top priority.  I got this ottoman at a local thrift store for $4.25 sometime last fall.  I always knew I was going to recover it, but didn’t exactly know how since I fail at being a serious crafter and have not taken a sewing lesson yet (shameful, I know).  Plus, trying to reupholster an ottoman that only has wood at the base was very tricky stuff so I had to get a little creative with the top. Check out the before and after.

I wrapped the ottoman with an aqua colored canvas fabric and stapled it to the bottom like I would with any other upholstered piece.  I wanted the sides to be smooth and the top to be a little different.  I’ve been seeing all these floor poufs covered in fabric flowers and figured I could do something much simpler and less time consuming.  My friend Jessica came to the rescue with a couple yards of white felt she wasn’t using.  Don’t you just love having friends with the same obsessions?!

The top is pleated and kept that way with a combination of hot glue and fabric glue.  I wanted the petals to have a slightly more organic feel, so the petals are pleated in the center to give the entire flower a little more volume and shape.

It now sits in my daughters room.  Perfect for a little girl and she loves it!

008
Ignore the fact her face is beat up from running into the desk at full speed during one of her many super toddler energy bursts and that she’s wearing a hat and short sleeves.  This girl is in a headgear obsessed phase. Helmets and hats all day, everyday.

I feel like I’ve gotten a ton of projects done so far this year. At least this part of my New Year’s resolution hasn’t gone down the drain!  Anyone feeling as productive in the “getting stuff done” department this year?

I just LOVE this project!!! And even more, I love the fact that you didn't sew it – yup, I'm in the same shameful boat as you not knowing a sewing machine from a hole in the ground!

Also, your daughter's nursery is lovely – and in fact so is your daughter!! SO cute!
