Changes | Rebranding

So, somethings have changed recently. I’ve started simplifying the blog and I  just got back from my five week adventure of traveling with two toddlers across two Continents… SOLO. Not for the feint of heart, but I’ll talk more about that later. I wanted to touch base with you about what I’ve been alluding too on Facebook. If you follow me on Instagram and Twitter, then you’ve probably already noticed a changed in my handles. I’ve gone from @diymaria to @augustjoyphoto. It’s not just a name change. I’m rebranding…

Why now? This has actually been on my mind for nearly two years. I’m a working portrait photographer. A HUGE part of my life involves capturing memories for my clients and I feel as if Craft Crazy Mom doesn’t fit my brand. I’ve been feeling torn about it and the spark that made me love blogging in the first place fizzled. Being away from the blog for the month I was on vacation gave me some perspective. No more fear of change.

Rebranding Craft Crazy Mom

I’m sure you’ve noticed a shift in the way blogs are written these days. It’s become about images being “pinable” and writing sponsored posts. To be honest… I hate it. A lot. A few bloggers do it successfully. Courtney does it well and I have mad respect for the way she’s monetized her blog. She is not the norm these days. Instead, I no longer feel inspired when I see images on Pinterest. I feel like I’m being sold something I don’t want. Posts dedicated to reviewing free products makes me lose faith in the sincerity of bloggers from all niches. The worst part of it all? I’m guilty of doing the same to you. I’m a sellout.

I understand that a lot of bloggers make a living off of their blog, but I don’t. My income comes from my business, August Joy Photography. The money I make from this blog covers hosting/domain fees for all my sites and the occasional theme and graphics update.

From here on out, no more sponsored posts unless it’s a brand I’ve purchased from (and genuinely love) prior to sponsorship. I committed to only working with brands I’ve used for the last few months. Have you noticed? I’m going to limit these kind of posts to just once a month. Instead of a ton of sponsored posts, I’m going to be doing more affiliate links, which will be labeled. That way I can still make enough income to cover my hosting and domain fees. Ads? I’m not 100% sure about whether or not I’ll be selling ads in my sidebar. I’m not sure I even want a sidebar. Design decisions are still in progress.

What does this mean for you, the reader? Hopefully a place you’ll want to come to read more about my life sprinkled with a little bit of creativity and inspiration.

Things will be completely transitioned by the first week of April. I’m working with a professional I’ve used before instead of doing it myself. Remember my post “Worth the squeeze“?  Same concept. I want the transition to be almost seamless with very little downtime and I want to make sure all my old links work. I simply do not have the time or patience to do that myself.

August Joy Studios will be up and running soon and I can’t wait to reveal the new and improved site. In the the meantime, I’ll still be blogging here at Craft Crazy Mom. The current url will also redirect you once the big move happens.

I hope you all understand why I’m rebranding. My heart just isn’t into blogging the way it is right now. Hoping you’ll stick around for pretty pictures and inspiration.

Good for you Maria! I understand where you are coming from. Now that I officially own my domain and site, I STILL HAVEN”T tried to advertise/make money through my blog because it just isn’t what I’m about. I’d like to make some moolah in the next year to at least cover basic costs, but I started to blog for me, and I’m going to continue on for those reasons. I think your work is fabulous, and I’m eager to see what you put out there in any form!

I love your blog! I felt like advertising and reviews were what I was “supposed” to be doing and I somehow lost that spark. The blog became more like work and a little less fun. Keep doing what you’re doing!
