Bold New Nightstand

So, I broke the rules yesterday. I bought a piece of furniture, which I’m suspended from until the hoard in the garage is cleared out. Well, when the cat (my husband) is away (watching football) the mice (me and my mini minion) will play…….with paint.

I had planned on just finding a couple frames for a possible gallery wall and a large frame for a soon to be revealed project. I told myself not to walk past the furniture, to just look the other way, but I saw something out of the corner of my eye hiding behind a gaggle of ugly chairs. SOLD! Just like that.

This poor thing was in fairly good shape, but someone thought it was a good idea to spray paint her “espresso” brown to “fix” her up and they even missed a spot. SIGH. YUCK. GROSS. WHY …… WHY? All these things were going through my head and yes, it was in all caps ;)

What is that? No really, what is that? Did someone take a saw to the top of this thing? Why at a weird angle, what is it for? I was puzzled. I considered using wood filler, but then I was struck with pure genius.

If you follow my Pinterest, you know that I’m having a slight obsession with patterns. This was my inspiration.

If anyone knows the original blog entry, please let me know. I’m dying to find out more about this room!

Okay, now think black and white, chevron and decoupage……… Ding, Ding, Ding! You guessed right. I just slapped some paper on top, slathered on some Mod Podge and called it good.

Actually, it wasn’t quite that simple. I got this chevron pattern (here) from Who is Bexxie, played with the settings until I got it just right, printed it out, THEN I busted out the Mod Podge.

This was a fairly simple project. I used ASCP in Old White, got the pulls from Home Depot, and used cardstock for the chevron pattern. What do you think? Major difference, right?

I painted the whole thing, then distressed a few spots, covered it in spray poly (satin finish), added new hardware, decoupaged and dry brushed a little ASCP on top, then sealed it again with some more spray poly. Easy peasy lemon squeezie!

Extra bonus is that my husband LOVES IT! He was completely shocked that I finished the entire project while he was watching the game at a friend’s house.

Notice the lampshade? Isn’t it lovely? Makes me smile every time I see it. I made that shade, it only took me 5 hours (5 old episodes of True Blood), a little bit of cursing, and a few glue gun burns. I found the tutorial over at Tatertots & Jello (here).

Oh yes, can’t forget the final makeover total.
1. Paint-FREE (already owned)
2. Spray Poly- FREE (already owned, use it ALL.THE.TIME)

And this picture is for those wondering how that $8 Pottery Barn crib turned out…. just a sneak peek ;)

Her great Aunty Shirley got it for her in Arizona. It's from the Douglas toy company, but it looks like they don't make them anymore. I did find this:
